The Diverse World of Music

A look at Carterville students preferred music genres.

All throughout the Carterville High School, many students have different music tastes. During Power Hour, students answered a form referring to their favorite music taste. For example, the form listed “Rap, Hip Hop, Pop, Rock, etc.” All the students, despite grades, had their own opinions on which was best.

The freshman collectively agreed that their most listened to genre is Hip Hop. Hip Hop is all about rhythm, poetry, and self expression. “I personally really enjoy Hip Hop,” said freshman Hailey Halliday. “My favorite artist (in that genre) is Ice Spice. I’m a big fan of most of her songs.”

Sophomores showed that pop was their favorite genre. Pop is fun, bubbly, and versatile. It’s no surprise that this genre was one of the grades number one. Sophomore, Alexis Cowser said, “No matter what mood you’re in when you’re listening to pop, it’s got songs that match the energy and that you can relate to.” Pop came a close second to most of the classes, but sophomores blew it out of the park.

When asked, juniors surprisingly decided on Rap as their ultimate choice. Rap is all about rhymes, rhythm, and flow. Junior, Haley Banovz said, “The beat speaks to my soul and makes it more enjoyable.”

Rap is a unique genre that tells stories through a rhyming form. While another junior, Kasey Long, said, “ Even though the majority of the playlists are rap songs collected in them, I still will mess with any type of music, but I overall love rap.”

Senior stats showed that country was their first choice. Country music is all about storytelling, heartache, and the simple things in life. Senior Gabe Landon explained his vote saying, “I love country because it reminds me of my childhood, and my fondest memories are being in the car with my parents listening to country on long drives; I also love the songwriting techniques because they tell stories about heartbreak love and suffering.” Country is surrounded by nostalgia whether personally being a fan or not.

Overall, everyone has their own opinions when it comes to music genres. Some prefer the more nostalgic and slow rhythm songs, while others choose high beat, bubbly, and fast paced songs. Music shows that everyone is different and unique in their own way.
