Mrs. Marcie Hubbard is one of many new additions to the Carterville High School staff this year. She has worked in numerous school districts throughout her teaching career, including working at Carterville Junior High School as an eighth grade English teacher for the last 15 years.
While it is not Mrs. Hubbard’s first time teaching at a high school level, she said she is excited to make the move this year. “At this stage in my career, I was ready to get back onto some heavier academics. Working with the older kids and watching them step up in leadership is something that I really value,” said Hubbard, who is the new Interact Club sponsor.
Mrs. Hubbard has been a teacher for 22 years, and is teaching English I and English II to freshmen and sophomores this year. Some students, such as sophomore Avery Chapman, had Mrs. Hubbard in both junior high and high school. “I like that she is supportive and can understand if you’re having a bad time or a bad day.”
Sophomore Alana Rausenberger said that her favorite thing about Mrs. Hubbard’s class is how she makes learning fun. “She always has us interacting with other classmates and moving around the room. It’s just a welcoming class that is always busy with fun learning.”
Even though Mrs. Hubbard is excited about the move, she will miss teaching junior high. “I loved that they are not afraid sometimes to step out and still be silly and funny like with classroom discussions and things,” she said of her junior high students. “They are willing to jump in. I also will really miss the people there.”
Mrs. Hubbard and Mrs. Leslie Dawson not only teach English II together, but they also share the same high school memories from their younger days both being Carterville graduates in the 1990s. Now, the two have adjacent classrooms. “It has been fantastic working with Mrs. Hubbard because I have known her since high school and I knew what a fantastic teacher she was at the junior high so we are very lucky to have her. It is like she has always been here,” Mrs. Dawson said.
Be sure to stop in and welcome Mrs. Hubbard to CHS when walking past her classroom. Expect to be greeted with a smile!
