Carterville wins first game of doubleheader against Monticello

CARTERVILLE – Thanks to great pitching, hitting, and determination throughout the cold weather, the Lions pulled off the 11-9 win against Monticello.

Cade Bolin started the game pitching with a lot of energy. Going into the fourth inning, the Lions led 7-1. The drought finally ended for Moticello in the top of the fourth inning with one run making the score 7-2 going into the fifth.

Bolin was relieved in the fifth inning by Brady Phillips. After two outs and some struggling, Phillips was relieved by Blake Barnard. After the fifth inning there was scoring from both the Lions and Sages making the score 9-3.

During the sixth inning, Lions let up six runs making the score 9-9. However, the Lions came back with two runs of their own to maintain the lead going into the 7th inning. Closing pitcher Peyton Bittle was able to hold off Monticello in the top of the 7th for an 11-9 Lions win. The Lions finished with 8 hits and 4 errors.

The Lions then played Murphysboro later that day with the momentum from the win against Monticello. To stay updated on Carterville sports follow Carterville Athletics on Instagram and Twitter.

Carterville and Murphy end in a tie after the fifth due to lack of sunlight

CARTERVILLE – Due to the unfortunate lack of sunlight leaving the 5th inning, the second game on Saturday against Murphysboro was called at a 13-13 tie.

Senior Drew Pestka made his first start of his final season as a Lion. Lasting three full innings, the Lions had a 6-3 lead over the Red Devils.

Pestka was relieved in the fourth inning by fellow senior JD Dawson. Dawson got the Lions through the fourth inning while only allowing a few runs. In the bottom of the fourth with two men on base, Cade Bolin popped one up down the first base line. The Red Devils missed the catch and, with several throwing errors, Bolin ended up getting a triple and scoring both runners.

In the fifth inning Dawson was relieved by Braden Wright after the score reached 9-9. After allowing a couple runs, Wright was relieved by Peyton Bittle. Bittle then got the Lions through the rest of the fifth with minimal damage.

Going into the bottom of the fifth, the final inning of the game, the Red Devils were up 13-9. With good hitting and better base running, the Lions tied the game back up at 13-13. Unfortunately the game ended at the tie because of being called after the inning was finished. The Lions ended with 6 hits and 5 errors.
