A Sit-Down with Zach Banovz

Zach Banovz is a senior at Carterville High School who has participated in basketball, baseball, and football throughout his athletic career. Banovz has played a variety of roles including punter, kicker, linebacker, offensive line, quarterback, and cornerback. We took a moment to sit down with him and reflect on this past season.

What is the best part about competing?

The best part about competing is the lengths we are willing to go out and try to pull out a win. Playing a sport without competing is not very fun because there is no feeling of accomplishment.

How did your teammates makes practice more enjoyable?

My teammates made practice more enjoyable with their high amounts of energy. They overall made practice a little bit more enjoyable

What makes you so passionate about sports?

From an early age I have loved to watch professional sports. I also was intrigued with how passionate they were about the game, I think it rubbed of on me.

Are there any teammates or coaches you look up to as a role model?

I have always looked up to coach Smurf because he is the basic definition of small and mighty. He would always encourage me to do better, but he also would ask me if needed anything outside of football.

What is your favorite sports quote?

“If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.” I believe that in sports it is more important to be mentally tough and sound rather than having skill.

Why do you like being part of a team sport?

I believe that playing a team sport is more competitive than playing a single solo sport. I tend to get down on myself and by playing a team sport my teammates are able to pick me up and have my back.
