High School Competitive Cheerleading has become a legacy in Carterville. The cheer team just competed at IHSA state this past weekend, finishing sixth. Carterville cheer has gone to IHSA state for 11 years and has made it to day 2 for 8 years while Linda Drust has been the head coach.

“Going to IHSA State for 11 consecutive years is a testimony to the resilience and talent of our team members. Each team continues to place their faith in Amy and me as their coaches for training and performance. Plus, we have great parent and administrative support to pursue a top level of performance year after year. But the main kudos go out to every team member.  They sacrifice their time and commit to what we call ‘trust the process.’  It is truly a joy and privilege to coach every athlete and team,” Drust says.

IHSA state is a process where you have to go through sectionals before you make it to state. Only 25 teams in each division are able to go, and from there, only 10 make it to the next day. Teams are also able to nominate an  “All-State Cheerleader.”

Senior Charlotte Williams has been nominated for 3 years. “It’s such an honor and a blessing to stand with the best in Illinois on the All State team. It’s an opportunity that I am so grateful to have had three years in a row. It’s taught me so many things, but specifically, that hard work pays off, and God will always be my source of strength,” said Williams.

State was a fun competition for these girls, but it was also a little sad when it came to an end. The seniors have spent their time in high school cheering for every football and basketball game while competing for a state title. Senior Addy Horn said, “My favorite part about going to IHSA state senior year was the wonderful friendships I created with my teammates throughout our season!”

While it was seniors last time competing at state, it was also freshman’s first ever time competing at state. Freshman Avery Shasteen said, “It was such a learning experience as my first year, I loved getting to see the happy looks on everyone’s faces when we performed our best.”

Overall, this team has had amazing experience at IHSA state. Many memories and lessons have been learned throughout this season. Anyone wanting to watch the girls perform their routine can find it this Friday, February 13, 2026 at the boys basketball game.
