Carterville High School is making history this winter with its first girls’ wrestling team. The new program marks an important step forward for the school’s athletic department, expanding opportunities for female athletes and reflecting the growing opportunities of girls wrestling across the state. The Carterville High Schools girls wrestling team has shown remarkable dedication and teamwork. Their commitment to learning has created a positive environment.

The team was formed due to growing interest from students who wanted a chance to wrestle at the high school level. According to sophomore Peyton Applehans, the idea began as a shared conversation between teammates, but one person helped turn it into reality. “It was definitely Masi. We both had the idea, but she was the one who pushed me to do it, and I’m so glad she did,” Applehans said.

Girls on the team come from different athletic backgrounds, while others are trying a school sport for the first time. Practices focus on learning basic techniques, improving conditioning and strength, and preparing for matches, tournaments, and state. The girls wrestling team has done well this year.

Wrestlers agree that the new program is about more than just wins and losses. The team is working to build confidence, commitment, and a strong sense of teamwork as they begin their first season together. Freshman Joplin Harrison says, “Being a part of a brand-new program has motivated many of us to work hard and represent Carterville with pride.”

Girls wrestling continues to make a strong statement this season, providing that determination and discipline are just as important as strength on the mat. As the season continues, sophomore Marlie Loyd said, “hope to set a strong example for future athletes and help the program continue to grow in the years ahead.”

The team’s coaches are dedicated to having a supportive environment where they can thrive. The wrestlers are not only learning the technical aspects of wrestling but are developing valuable life skills such as discipline, teamwork, and resilience.

The program aims to empower young women and young people by encouraging them to push their limits and achieve their goals both on and off the mat. With the team’s success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the athletes, coaches, and supporters who have come together to make this dream a reality. The future looks bright for the Carterville High School girls wrestling team.
