You’ve seen your teachers and classmates in the halls, or in classes, but after that 2:54pm bell rings you go home. Have you ever thought about what these students and staff do outside of school? From reading to unicycling, students and staff have a wide variety of interesting hobbies and hidden talents.
For example, freshman Cameron McClellan was talking with his seventh grade study hall teacher and Yarn Club advisor, Mrs. Kain, when she told him he should join. Although he didn’t know much about crocheting, he managed to get the hang of it after a week of practicing. Despite his friends calling it a “grandma” thing, he continues to enjoy crocheting in his free time. “People laugh when they hear that I crochet because they consider it a ‘grandma’ thing to do, but I laugh with them because it is really just an ongoing joke between me and some of my friends,” Cameron said.
Another student, sophomore Maggie Mandell, was visiting a family-friend, Pat, who used to ride unicycles, and decided to teach Maggie how to do it. Unfortunately, it was hard to learn how since Pat lives in Chicago. However, he bought Maggie her own unicycle, and she spent around a year practicing ,eventually getting the hang of it.
Although people usually get very confused and surprised when she talks about it, she loves seeing the look on their face. It is not everyday you meet someone who can ride a unicycle. “It was a very, very hard thing to learn, but its very fun to do once you learn it.If anyone told me that they wanted to start it, I’d make sure to tell them that they really have to commit to doing it because even if it takes a long time, it is so worth it in the end,” said Maggie.
The father of an anonymous sophomore, decided to teach his daughter how to work on cars, since it was something he did often. After a year or two of learning, this sophomore learned all about cars and how to fix them. She now works on cars in her free time to carry on the tradition. “People are kinda surprised because I guess I’m not the “type” who would do it,” anonymous said.
These are just a few of the many talented students who attend our high school. This just proves how there’s more to your fellow classmates than what meets the eye. While schoolwork is important, every student has something that they enjoy outside of the classroom.
