The Evolution of Golf

This past decade, the golf world has extended further than the PGA tour. Different founders have brought new opportunities for the professional players to experience more than just golf. The first new experience was LIV Golf. This new league offered players to perform individually and in team competitions. Next in 2024, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy brought in the indoor golf league, TGL. TGL was an indoor golf simulator competition brought to life. These new opportunities have made it more lucrative and enjoyable for the professional players.

The LIV golf program, founded in 2021, was an additional golf competition that many find controversial compared to the PGA tour. Several golfers transferred over to the LIV golf for higher pay rates and more enjoyable experiences. In an interview in 2023, Bryson DeChambeau stated, “I continue to see LIV Golf growing. It’s going to grow at an exponentiating pace for years to come, and we aren’t going anywhere,” he shares as just an announced captain of the Crushers and to grow the future of LIV golf. LIV golf is very different than the PGA tour with more fun and less strict rules. Some examples of this is music playing on the course, the players are allowed to wear shorts, and there are no cut formats with a shot gun start. LIV only plays fifty four holes and no pro am events compared to the PGA tour. LIV golf has brought in many different opinions and controversy to the golf world due to the founders of the league. However, it has provided what some might say is a fun and interesting idea to the golf world.

Some fans may agree that LIV Golf has brought in more enjoyment and fun for players and viewers, however a majority of people do not like this new league. People believe that because it has separated the big stars in golf. It has divided the top competition and has made people loose interest. People also do not like the founders and where the money is coming from for LIV Golf in Saudi Arabia. When LIV Golf first began, PGA commissioner Jay Monahan despised this new idea. He hated where the money  was from and hated how many players were leaving. Shortly after, Monahan completely switched sides which caused a major break out. In a Player’s press conference, Monahan stated, “I do believe that negotiating a deal with PIF is the best outcome … I think an ultimate deal would be in the best interest of the game and ultimately would be in the best interest of the tour.” Monahan’s statement has still not happened and has caused many issues. LIV Golf has caused many different opinions to come out, however, if they find other solutions to bring the sides together again, it could be successful.

The TGL indoor golf league, founded in 2024, was a new way to bring more entertainment to the players and fans at home by using a golf simulator. There are four professional golfers on each team representing a well known city. These six teams competed for the SoFi trophy during a two month period. The golfers hit into a 53ft tall screen while hitting on real life turf from the Masters. They provided grass and the white sand from Augusta National. Players would then go over to the moving green that replicates various holes. Tiger Woods stated, “TGL is the next evolution within professional golf, and I am committed to helping lead it into the future. Embracing technology to create this unique environment gives us the ability to move our sport into prime time on a consistent basis alongside so many of sports’ biggest events.” The TGL indoor competition was very successful and was a new concept. This new tournament allowed it to be more fun and appealing to all ages. With the success that the TGL brought in, it will be returning in January 2026.

Overall, these new programs have brought highs and lows into the golf world. LIV Golf and the TGL are very different and have brought in different opinions and viewings. LIV Golf has brought in many different ideas and controversial topics, however, it is making players more happy with higher pay and less rules. TGL has brought in the more fun side of golf and is allowing families to connect in their homes. While both of these new golf leagues are very different, they both have brought in many different ideas and aspects into the golf world.
