Having siblings in school can be good and bad at the same time. What about when the siblings are seniors and freshmen in high school?
Usually, you think it would be bad, but freshman Mackinze Reames says, “It is a great thing. My brother was in high school before me, and I was able to know what to expect and prepare myself more for it. Also, most of my teachers like me because they loved Mason when they had him.”
Maybe it’s not so bad after all.
When siblings are younger, they can have a closer relationship. They might share things in common like their favorite game, sport, song, or even movie. Age gaps like 1-2 years aren’t so bad.
There’s also a downside to that. When siblings are closer in age, they are more likely to have sibling rivalry. Sibling rivalry is where you often try to get more attention from the parents than the other sibling.
For example, when I was younger, my sister and I were playing basketball in the basement when we jumped after the ball and she twisted my wrist. As we went upstairs, I cried and exclaimed that my wrist hurt, and she said the same thing. We both went to get an x-ray, and it turns out I had a broken wrist and she did not.
There are many advantages to having a senior-year sibling. For example, as a freshman I know I can rely on my sister, who is a senior, to be there if I get confused on my homework, or get lost somewhere. Also, if you have an older sibling you’re more likely to know the teachers and the other students who are older. Usually, when you come to a new school you do not know whether or not the teachers are nice. Since I have an older sister, I have been told about these teachers.
All siblings have different responsibilities. Seniors in high school are now getting ready for college. Their decision on college can affect your whole life. They have all worked hard but still have responsibilities. Senior Avery Chapman said, “Being in high school with my sister is not much different considering we are in two different grades. But, I don’t like coming back to the school to pick her up at the end of the day.”
Although there are upsides and downsides to the senior and freshman sibling age gap, it is nice to know that at the end of the day, there’s always someone you know is in your corner at CHS.
