Carterville High School has had quite a few changes over just this past year. There has been an addition of clubs, teachers teaching electives they have never before, and much more.
Mr. Herbst was a former English teacher at Carterville Junior High School. He is now teaching English at the high school. However, he is not new to the high school since he has been helping with the production of the annual fall play for many years.
Mr. Herbst has many thoughts about the high school so far, he said, “It’s been really great so far, but definitely a change of pace teaching three different classes rather than eighth grade all day.” While he has enjoyed his time at the high school so far, he misses the junior high. Elaborating on this, he said,“[I miss] the junior high as a whole because it is a lot smaller and you are a lot closer with the whole building.”
Mr. Schlabach was a former Designs to Reality teacher at Carterville Junior High School. However, he has been teaching shop class at the high school alongside his Jr High class, so he is not completely new to CHS. Now he is full time at the high school.
Mr. Schlabach has much to say about his switch to being full time at the high school. He said, “It’s been a lot of fun, we can get more done here, offering more and longer classes for kids.”
While he has enjoyed moving to the high school full time, he misses working with the junior high students. “I will miss it. It was fun introducing a lot of new things to kids that have never seen things like that,” Schlabach said.
Both Mr. Herbst and Schlabach have one thing in common; they are excited to work at the high school, but will miss the junior high. They will have some adjusting to, but they will have help from our wonderful teachers and student body.
Overall, Carterville High School is changing and will continue to keep changing. This is both bittersweet and amazing, but it will keep our school a wonderful environment to be a part of. The whole school is happy and ready to help Mr. Herbst and Mr. Schlabach on their new teaching journey.
