CARTERVILLE – The Carterville boys soccer team fell short in their home and conference opener, losing 3-2 against the Murphysboro Red Devils, falling to 3-1 on the season.
Carterville opened strong, with sophomore Ameen Alzoubaidi scoring the first goal of the game. Murphysboro answered with a goal on a penalty kick, tying the game. The first half ended on a missed penalty kick from Carterville, keeping the stalemate.
The Red Devils opened up the second half scoring back-to-back goals, making for a tall task for the Lions. Though junior Atticus Applebee scored on a penalty kick with under ten minutes to go, Carterville fell just shy of a comeback, losing 3-2.
The Lions look forward to Tuesday, September 9th, where they head south to face their conference rivals, the Patriots of Massac County. For updates on everything Carterville athletics, follow us on X/Twitter @CHS_Lion_Ath and on Instagram @Lions_Ath_CHS.
