For the longest time clothes have been how students express themselves by showing their interests and styles. Students are not able to always wear what they want because the dress code is too strict at school. Students agree that schools should have a dress code but should not be as strict, because the students could start to feel bad about themselves.

There are a lot of issues with the dress code, because they are more likely to target female students than males. The school shouldn’t be so strict if the parents are fine with the clothes they wear. The dress code can make an impact on people’s mental health and make them feel more self conscious. The dress code targets girls’ clothes, such as skirts, spaghetti strap tank tops, and spandex.

“The dress code normally affects me with clothes I would like to wear on a day to day basis for instance, tank tops, crop tops, and off the shoulder shirts. Sometimes it affects my ability to wear dresses too. The dress code also doesn’t allow certain shorts. I think we need limitations on length that aren’t crazy but not on the item of clothing itself” anonymous said.

Schools shouldn’t be so controlling of what people wear. Girls do wear and have clothes that have a little bit more midriff, so they are more likely to get dress coded for showing skin. A lot of inappropriate shirts that students wear are connected to drugs, gangs, alcohol, and violence. Showing a little bit of skin is not bad because everyone has a stomach and it is less of a distraction than some of the bad things on other people’s shirts. Most parents see what their kids wear before they leave, so why is the school so strict on what students wear?

“It mostly affects me when I want to wear an off the shoulder shirt, or when I want to wear shorts because most of my shorts roll up when I walk or sit down,” freshman Kaylin Adkins said.

It shouldn’t be the schools job to tell students what they can or can not wear because the parents bought the clothes and they are fine with what their kids wear. At school teachers and staff are there to help students learn, instead they are taking their time to dress code the students. If the students come to school wearing it, then that is what they are comfortable in, so why get them in trouble for it.

“I feel like the dress code is mostly pointed at the female students and that is unfair. The dress code keeps people from expressing themselves. Boys can wear tank tops that show their whole side while a girl can’t even wear a skirt. Yes, I realize that tank tops and skirts are different but it’s the same concept. The dress code could loosen up on females a little bit” anonymous said.

The school needs to be less strict on what the students wear, because the students are growing up and they can make the decision of what they can wear. The school needs to let the students express themselves by the clothes they wear.
