CARTERVILLE– The Carterville Lions Spring Sports showcased several double-headers, as well as the Carterville Track and Field Invite this past Saturday (4/12).
The morning started strong with Girls Softball blocking out the Carbondale Terriers resulting in a strong 9-0 final score. Mason Kries (Fr.) pitched phenomenally during the game, with the team working perfectly in tandem to keep Carbondale from scoring a single run. Emilyn Ford (Fr.) subbed in in Kries’ place to close out the last inning, keeping the Terriers off the bases.
Their next game, against Tolono Unity, also resulted in a Lions win of 5-3. Cadence Phillips (Jr.) took over pitching this game, striking out one opposer after another.
Also during the Saturday Showcase, Lions Baseball played a double-header. Their morning game was against Cape Notre Dame, where the Lions knocked it out of the park with a final score of 11-1. Gavin Skelcher (Jr.) hit his first high school career double during this game.
In their evening game they faced Tolono Unity and although Carterville’s first inning held 3 runs, giving the team hope for the rest of the game, the Lions were turned around from their previous win into a loss of 6-11.
The Track & Field Invite ended well with the Boys finishing in 4th place and the Girls finishing in 2nd. Molly Robertson (Sr.) beat her own school record once again this year in both the 1600 and the 3200 races. Mercedes Levesque (Sr.) placed 1st in the high jump, maxing out at 5 feet.
For the boys, Mason Watts (Sr.) also placed 1st in high jump, with an astounding 6 foot 2 inches. Zach Carter (Soph.) made a name for himself placing 3rd in the long jump with a 20 foot 2.5 inch jump.
