In sports everyone wants to be the best of the best, everyone wants to be remembered and talked about even when their careers are over. All players in professional sports are looking for an edge over their opponent whether that means hitting the gym and getting stronger and faster, or changing your equipment to help get an edge over everyone else. Not only are players and coaches are changing the game with new equipment and better things, leagues are changing rules to stop players from getting this edge and improving to get the win over their opponents.
Torpedo bats are a hot new take on the game of the 2025 MLB season. The Yankees and some other players have taken advantage of these new torpedo bats to increase every aspect in their hitting game. These new bats look like a normal bat except for the end of the bat that looks like the combined bat and a bowling pin.
The reason they are stirring up so much controversy is because the players hitting with them are hitting very well. The new bats have not been proven to be legal or illegal by the MLB either so their is no way to know if it is cheating or not. But for now they are legal and hitters are improving big time from them.
What makes these torpedo bats have an advantage over the normal bats from last season? The design of the torpedo bats make the bat easier to swing and swing faster allowing the hitter to sit and wait to commit to the pitch coming towards them. Also they moved the sweet spot and the barrel of the bat more towards the middle of the bat to allow better hits from a better swing.
The team using them the most is the New York Yankees who have been hitting very well with them. The Yankees hit 18 home runs in the first four games of the season breaking the MLB record. Player Aaron Judge who hit 27 home runs last season has hit 4 home runs in 5 games this season. Teammate Jazz Chisolm Jr. has hit 3 home runs this season and has a 0.300 batting average and has 6 RBIs in his first five games all with a torpedo bat.
Players and teams have been proven to hit better with these torpedo bats and it seems that these new and improved bats will change baseball forever. I think it is a good thing for baseball because your watch games to see home runs be hit, and these baseball bats are like a professional golfer getting fitted for his clubs and people are perfectly fine with that. But with these new bats the MLB is looking into them finding if they might hurt the game with them being to good.
This situation is like the Philadelphia Eagles and their tush push. The NFL is looking to ban the tush push because the Eagles have been using it on fourth and shorts to get a first down or a touchdown which led them to win the SuperBowl this year. The Eagles have mastered this play and it is causing a lot of problems for their opponents defense.
The NFL has banned plays before but this is different because only one team is doing it and is consistently good at it. A play similar to this is a QB sneak which has been around for many years in the NFL and is used on Fourth and Shorts like the tush-push and the QB sneak has never really been questioned.
With the NFL trying to ban the tush-push, it is kind of showing that the professional leagues around America might have a little to much control over the league and players. I think players should help decide because they are the ones using and playing against it and know whether they think it should be banned or not.
I think professional leagues should try a player committee like the PGA has, because golf has a mountain of rules and they have a players committee to help decide which ones should stay or go and help make more league decisions that will help improve the game.
Overall I think they should keep the tush-push and the torpedo bats because I think both could improve both sports for the better and it helps teams have some advantage over their opponents which is what sports are all about.
