Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate those around and everything people are appreciative of, with many having different special treats they enjoy every year.
With Thanksgiving only being two days away, people’s excitement for their holiday treats is at an all time high. Carterville junior Lillie Keen said her favorite dessert is, “the Pumpkin Pie that my mom makes because it always hits the spot.”
Pumpkin Pie has been a staple in Thanksgiving dinner every year since the beginning of time. The flavor and scent of pumpkin is universal during fall, with there being multiple different pumpkin-related foods being brought out to celebrate Thanksgiving. It is usually eaten around Thanksgiving or Christmas time because it symbolizes the start of harvest season. With the season changing to fall and the leaves changing color, pumpkins are one of the most highly thought of fruit during this time of year.
Another commonly loved sweet treat, especially in the south, is banana pudding. Sophomore Laura Virgo said, “Nothing compares to a good banana pudding with some Vanilla Wafers in it, I literally devour it anytime my family makes it.”
Banana Pudding has been a traditional dessert in southern areas for decades, with it even originating in the south. The beloved treat holds the feelings of fall, the nice coziness, and comfort that goes along with the season. The sweet vanilla filled dessert is often changed up a bit especially for Thanksgiving, with some people adding pumpkin spice or cinnamon into it to add a bit more of complimenting flavors. It is a crowd-favorite that pleases both the tummy and heart because of the sense of nostalgia that comes with the pudding.
One less popular sweet treat around fall time is peach cobbler. Junior Cheyenne Wood says that “My favorite dessert I would have to say is Peach Cobbler. It looks so cute in its little pie pan and tastes absolutely delicious with some whipped cream on top of it.”
This dessert is known for the sweet, peach filling. It is commonly paired with seasonal spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, with both adding more flavor onto the natural sweetness of the peaches inside. As Cheyenne mentioned previously, Peach Cobbler is loved by itself but also with a small or large dollop of whipped cream depending on the person’s sweetness tolerance.
While Pumpkin Pie, Banana Pudding , and Peach Cobbler are not the only holiday dessert loved by many, they are a few of the most popular ones at Carterville High School.
