As the holiday season quickly approaches, it begs the question, how early is too early for Christmas spirit?

This topic has long been debated, causing many people to try and find the appropriate time to set up festive decorations. These decorations include setting up Christmas trees, stringing lights or other festive objects to place throughout homes. For some, setting up these decorations is done the morning after Halloween, when the month of November first begins, while others wait until after Thanksgiving. While it is a personal preference, many individuals have strong opinions on what is right and what is wrong.

Carterville student, junior Addy Horn, shares her opinions on this matter saying, “It’s never too early to decorate for Christmas. Christmas should be up twelve months out of the year if you ask me. I decorate, personally, on November first every year.”

Some students expressed that they would decorate even earlier in the year if they could such as sophomore Evan Miranti. When asked the earliest he would ever decorate Miranti said, “July 5, right after the 4th of July.”

There are many components that contribute to getting into the Christmas Spirit so early in the year, even if it is just to be in a better mood. Annual Christmas activities such as music, decorations and traditions can all contribute to this. Student junior Lily Arnett shares her opinion on this stating that, “It is never too early to be happy. Christmas makes everyone happy, especially those struggling.”

While many Carterville High School students believe it is never too soon to get into the Christmas spirit, others still stand strong in their belief of waiting to decorate until at least after Thanksgiving. Many factors contribute to this belief such as embracing the importance of Thanksgiving, believing if Christmas starts too early, it can overshadow this significant holiday. Others, choose to wait simply due to the fact that it is tradition and something that has always been done.

Junior Kenadi Compton said, “My family has never decorated before Thanksgiving, we always do it the day after. Nor will my family start listening to Christmas music until we are putting up our tree. My family believes that you shouldn’t start anything Christmas until after Thanksgiving.”

Even if there is lots of disagreement on when the appropriate time to decorate for Christmas is, there is no denying the inevitable Christmas spirit bound to occur as the holiday season approaches.
