Throughout the years, fashion trends have been coming and going, but lately a newer fashion trend coming back is the 90’s. The 90’s had styles like Grunge and haircuts like “The Rachel,” and they’re all slowly coming back into style.
90’s Styles
The 90’s was full of different styles of clothes and hair, but Grunge is the style most people think about when they think of 90’s fashion. This style was popularized by famous bands of the 90’s such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Grunge is a clothing style that consists of baggy or oversized, dark colored and distressed clothes with accessories such as patches, pins or chains, paired with combat boots or Converse. However, the Grunge style did begin fading in 1994 after the death of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, although many people even today still wear the 90’s Grunge look today. “I think 90’s fashion is very cut. Since I was born in 2010, it’s cool to see what the style was when I wasn’t alive” said an anonymous Carterville High School student.
90’s Clothes
Along with the styles, there are many individual articles of clothing that have made a comeback from the 90’s such as band tees. Band tees are pretty self explanatory since they are a t-shirt with a band logo on it. Even though a lot of people don’t actually know what band is on the shirt they’re wearing, it’s still a fashion trend that many people wear today.
Another trend that’s coming back is cargo pants and Converse. Cargo pants and Converse are coming back whether they’re worn together or not mostly because they go with the “Grunge look.” Striped shirts, bucket hats, crop tops and platform shoes are also making a comeback.
90’s Haircuts
One of the more popular haircuts of the 90’s was known as “The Rachel.” The Rachel became popular after the hit TV show Friends, which included a character named Rachel Green played by Jennifer Aniston, who had a haircut loved by nearly everyone in the mid 90’s. But not everyone loved it because in an interview with Allure Magazine back in 2011, Jennifer Aniston herself said “How do I say this? I think it was the ugliest haircut I’ve ever seen. What I really want to know is, how did it have legs?… I don’t love revisiting that particular era.”
Although this left many people in the 90’s shocked, “The Rachel” was still a very popular haircut for decades after the TV show’s debut in 1994. Even after Anniston shared her opinions on this popular haircut, she still brought it back for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards in 2024.
Another popular haircut of the 90’s was called “The Greaser” that originated in the 50’s but was revived in the 90’s due to a wave of mid-century nostalgia. The Greaser also became popular due to its voluminous slicked-back “bad boy” look that was appropriate for late nights out and dates. Although this was a popular hairstyle it eventually went out of style because of newer trends, it still made a comeback here in 2024.
These are just a few of the many nostalgic trends that are currently making a comeback.
