Among Cartervilles many Halloween celebrations and traditions is the beloved “Haunted Hayride” which tours the pathways of canon park every October. Hosted by the Lions Club, the hayride is a collection of different local clubs and organizations who put together their own spooky scenes as the loaded tractors drive by.

Carterville High School’s own art club even puts together their own stop every year, showcasing the creative talents of the students who participate. The hayride gives these students the opportunity to hand make props, costumes, and other pieces to create their scenes.

Before anyone can begin the process of creating their costumes however, art club sponsor Mr. Breedan decides on the theme for the year. “We always try to pick something original, and that everyone can participate in,” he says. This year, he chose to have the club portray zombies.

With only a few weeks to prepare, art club members work at creating their costumes and props at meetings after school. A big part of the creation of the costumes is the usage of special effects makeup. Students create this makeup by hand using latex and paint to mold fake wounds and scratches that enhance the illusion.

“The hayride is definitely one of my favorite parts of being in the club,” says art club student leader Katie Yocum, “I love seeing everyone’s costumes and makeup come together.”

When the weekend of the event finally arrives, the students who volunteer show up a few hours before the hayride to set up props and get into costume. “It can be pretty stressful, but the outcome is definitely worth it” says art club president Cheyanne Cockrun “I love when we finally get to show off everything we’ve been working on.”
