One specific sport that continues to improve is the golf team. There are two of them, one being the girls’ team and the other being the boys’ team. Both have begun the new school year in full swing with daily practices and as well as matches. This year, both teams are off to a good start with even lower scores than last year along with some new additional players that were not on the team last season.

The first away match the girls’ team appeared at was the Nashville Invitational on August 22nd. One of the players did especially well, placing 7th overall with a score of 42. Freshman Merryn Elliot recalls her favorite match this year, “So far I have really liked the Nashville invitational. I got 7th out of 70 girls and was the only freshman in the top 10. It gave me a lot of encouragement and I am excited to continue this season”.

Junior Macie Clark said, “I’m very happy to be back to the school team. Golfing can be pretty isolating, so being able to play and have fun with the girls on my team is such a good time. Everyone is so nice, and we all build each other up. Seeing how myself, and my teammates have improved has been awesome, and I’m so excited to see what this season holds.”

For the Carterville boys’ team, in their first home match of the season, this match occurred at the home course, Crab Orchard Golf Course, on August 23rd. Their score  together was  176 earning them third place in the match. Junior Carson Hagler scored the lowest, with a 43 at this match. One returning member from the boys’ team is sophomore Ryder Eigenrauch said the most challenging part of golf for him is, “making sure to keep his head held high after getting a bad shot.”

Harris and Eigenrauch are returning players who are not new to having low scores at matches. The other players selected for the match are also returning members who have proved themselves in previous matches.

The players highlighted above are not the only ones who have shown their golf experience. Everyone on both teams has been doing their best to succeed in golf and it is extremely evident. The season has started on the right track with even more accomplishments to come throughout the rest of the season.
