CARTERVILLE – Thanks to some timely runs, the Lions survived a midweek non-conference match up against the Hamilton County Foxes with a 54-41 win.
The first quarter ran smooth for the Lions, allowing them to lead 13-9. However, it was not all smiles, as the second quarter ran rough for the Lions.
With three minutes left in the half, senior Josh Waller made an effort to create some distance with a three-pointer, making the score 19-16 Lions. Minutes later, the Foxes pushed to close the gap getting within one, 21-20, on 3 straight Lion turnovers.
Junior Drew Barrington went up for 2 just before the half, furthering the Lions lead. The teams went into the locker room with the score of 24-22 in favor of CHS.
The remaining half stayed back and forth for the teams, but the Lions stayed ahead, ending the third quarter 38-32.
The fourth kept the Lions on top. Sophomore Colten Hawkins had back-to-back points bringing the score to 45-37 Lions with few minutes left. The Lions only allowed 5 more points for the Foxes and ended the game with a 54-41 win.
The Lions will play again on January 12 at Murphysboro High School. For more winter sports updates follow @Cartervilleath on Instagram and Twitter.
