Hellriegel’s TDs lead Lions over Murphysboro

CARTERVILLE – Carterville football extended their season to 3-0 with a 49-28 upset over Murphysboro at home. The Carterville offense was led by quarterback Andrew Hellriegel with 5 rushing touchdowns and running back Bryce Smith with 224 rushing yards in the victory. 

The Lions defense started off strong in the first quarter with a defensive stop, allowing for the offense to take the field and score. Hellriegel would lead the offense down the field and run it in for the touchdown, putting the Lions up 7-0. 

This process would be repeated again; the Lions defense would shut down the Murphysboro Red Devils and Hellriegel would run it in again, putting the lions up 14-0 early in the first. 

The defense would continue to dominate, stopping the Red Devils for the third time in the first quarter. The Lions offense took the field with Nolan Hartford rushing for a 30 yard touchdown to put Carterville up 21-0 in the first quarter. 

Going into the second quarter, the Lions defense would step up yet again, forcing the Red Devils to punt. Hellriegel ran it in for the third time, putting the Lions up 28-0 in the second. Finally late in the second quarter, Murphysboro would find their groove, scoring their first touchdown of the game. 

The Lions would score three more times throughout the game on two more rushing touchdowns for Hellriegel and one from Smith.  

The Lions hope to keep the winning streak alive as they hit the road to face DuQuoin on September, 16th.
