Madison Trojans Fall to the Carterville Lions

CARTERVILLE – The Carterville Lions took a big win over the Madison Trojans Friday night for their Pink Out game with a score of 54-32, moving their record to 5-2. 

In the first quarter, Townsaend Barton (Sr.) had a rushing touchdown and caught the two point conversion making the score 8-0 Lions with 9:25 left on the clock.

Soon after, with 7:57 left, the Trojans made a touchdown pass, but their 2 point conversion was blocked by Barton. Making the score 8-6 Lions.

Andrew Hellriegel (Jr.) made a complete pass to Blake Burkey (Jr.) with 5:59 left in the first quarter bringing the score to 14-6 Lions. Nolan Hartford (Jr.)  came in with 60 yard pick-six, adding Jaron Luttenbachers (Sr.) to bring  the Lions to a 21-6 lead over the Trojans with 4:34 left in the first quarter.

Like déjà vu, Zack Rice (Sr.) catches another interception for the Lions. Hellriegel added another touchdown pass, this time to Jordan Cordes (Jr.), making the score 28-6 for the remainder of the quarter.

The Lions started off the second quarter with a huge hit from Ivan Jones (Sr.) to the Trojans #5. Hartford then got his second interception of the night with 5:55 left in the second quarter. Barton tacked on a 67 yard touchdown run, making the score 34-6 Lions with 5:45 left in the half.

Promptly, the Lions get the ball back on a fumble from the Trojans giving them a first-and-goal with 4:38 left in the quarter. Luttenbacher’s kick furthered the Lions lead to 38-6 with 3:36 left in the half. 

The Lions started off the third quarter with a touchdown and two point conversion, both from Barton, making it 46-6 Lions. This started the continuous clock for the remainder of the game.

Not long after Barton’s touchdown, the Trojans ran one in themselves. However, their two point conversion was incomplete keeping the score at 46-12.

With 4:50 Left in the third quarter, the Trojans once again got a touchdown, but the two point conversion was no good.

Soon after, Brandon Skelcher (So.) threw a complete pass to Luttenbacher for a Lions first down. In the blink of an eye, Aiden Hinton (So.) had a 73 yard touchdown run, plus Luttenbacher’s two point conversion, made it 54-18 for the rest of the quarter.

The Trojans started off the fourth quarter with a touchdown, fighting the score up to 54-24. Then, the Trojans made another touchdown with a two point conversion, forcing it to 54-32 with  9:94 left in the game. The Lions keep the Trojans at bay for the rest of the game, ending it as 54-32 Lions.

The Lions will play the Pinckneyville Panthers on their turf on October 15, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.
