What’s Your Horoscope?

Dava Smith, staff writer

There have been rumors going around about a new zodiac sign, Ophiuchus, that shifts almost everyone’s current signs. But I am here to tell you that this IS NOT TRUE. As Mrs. Seifert said, “I don’t like it, I don’t like it, I don’t like it.”  While there are 13 constellations, the Babylonians only used the commonly known 12 to correspond with the 12 months in their calendar. Since the Earth’s axes no longer face the same way, one could argue it was the perfect time to implement the 13th constellation into normal use, but some argue that the Babylonians did a lot of research and put a lot of consideration into whether or not to include it. So if they didn’t think we needed it then, we most definitely don’t need it now. Astronomy and astrology are not the same. While everyone can agree the constellations have shifted in relation to the earth over time, the zodiac sign you’ve always identified with is based on a Western, “artificial” system. This system is based on the sun and how the planet revolves around it, which is why zodiac dates don’t change regardless of what’s going on in the stars — the rotation around the sun always remains the same. This is why if you are a Libra, well, you’re going to remain one for life. Ophiuchus definitely exists, but it doesn’t change anything, as Maddie Savage said, ” You can’t change space.”  See below for the normal zodiac signs.
