Land of Lincoln Honor Flight

Myah Richards, Head Editor

The Land of Lincoln Honor Flight gives Veterans the opportunity to fly to the country’s capital in their recognition. On October 17th, 2017, Veterans from all over the state were given this opportunity to visit Washington D.C. Flights were boarded from both Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield and Veterans Airport here in Southern Illinois. The veterans flew out early in the morning to tour the city. A crowd of friends, family, and other civilians, gave them a great send off from the airport as well as greeting them as they landed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Many visited the World War II, Korea, and Vietnam Memorials. They were also given the chance to see the Capitol, White House, and the Lincoln Memorial. Each veteran is accompanied by a guardian to help them have the best experience.  My grandfather was given the opportunity to be a passenger on the Springfield flight accompanied by my mother. All were able to watch the changing of the guards at Arlington National Cemetery. Veterans from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam were able to visit their own memorials, which is an opportunity that they may never be able to take on their own. I would like to thank the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight for giving my grandfather and the other veterans this opportunity. More importantly, I would like to address all veterans for their service and love, we thank you.
