CARTERVILLE – The Lions suffered a devastating loss tonight against the Nashville Hornettes. Carterville lost in two sets (14-25, 19-25) to Nashville, the fourth-ranked team in Illinois. The Hornettes won at all three levels, sweeping the Lions.

Set One

The set started off with a five-point run by Nashville. Carterville earned their first point with a missed serve, giving them a quick break from the Hornettes offense. After this, the Hornettes went on a nine-point run until Bella Mavigliano got a kill making the score 3-14. This wasn’t enough to help the Lions, and the Hornettes kept ahead the entire set. The Lions made a small four-point run, but couldn’t find a point for the remainder of the set. The Hornettes won the set 25-14.

Set Two

The second set started off with a kill by the Hornettes. The Lions tied the score at 4-4 with a kill by Mavigliano, but the Lions were still unable to write a different script from the first set. A kill by Ally Lange made the score 19-16, and this was the closest the Lions came to gaining the lead. The set ended when Sydney Stuck blocked the ball out, and the Hornettes won 25-19.

This was a big game against the top two ranked teams in Southern Illinois. This was the Lions first conference loss putting them 1-1 in the SIRR Conference Mississippi Division. This brings the Lions overall record to 22-2. Mavigliano had the leading number of kills with nine, and Regan Eigenrauch followed with six kills. Wallace had the most assists with 12. The Lions travel to Anna-Jonesboro on September 27th for their next game.
