Going into high school can be a frustrating and nerve-racking experience for most freshman. Here are some tips and tricks to help the new “freshie’s” make it through without a scratch!

Carterville High School can be intimidating from a freshman’s point of view. It’s huge! Most likely you will get turned around every once and awhile. Being around older students can be very different, but DO NOT be afraid to ask where a class is. Older students like to show off their knowledge, so they will be happy to help new students out. The upperclassmen may know the building from top to bottom; however, they don’t always lead by example. Additionally, during the past school year, many students struggled with the concept of walking in the hallways. Please take notes. The hallways work as though it is a narrow road. You always walk on the right side of the hall!  Also, just like on a road, if you abruptly stop, you may be rear-ended. For everyone’s sake, please don’t stop. Avoid stopping to talk (or yell) to someone.

Another tip, respect our school and teachers. No one likes a disrespectful student. Teacher’s are here for YOU. To earn respect, you must be respectful as well. They are not against you; they want you to get out of high school too! You should also trust them; they want you to be successful. Also, don’t be afraid to talk to teachers about grades! If you are struggling with a class, then they will always do their best to help you out! Teachers are cool, so treat them and other students with respect.

Senior, Shelby Olson has a word of advice for the new freshman class, “ Work hard. Everything you do really matters when you are applying for colleges and planning for your future.”

Carterville teachers and returning students are excited to meet the incoming freshman class and are looking forward to inviting the new students into to High School. The CHS Sphinx hopes everyone has a great school year next year!
